New U.S. citizens taking the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony

Proposed USCIS Naturalization Fee Increase: What Applicants Need to Know Before Filing

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a U.S. citizen, now may be the right time to begin the process.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed increasing the filing fee for Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, by approximately 75%. Under the proposal, the standard paper filing fee would increase from $760 to $1,330, while the online filing fee would increase to $1,280. The proposal would also eliminate the reduced-fee option and most fee waivers currently available for eligible applicants. The changes have not yet taken effect, but they could significantly increase the cost of applying once finalized.¹

What Is Changing?

The proposed rule would:

  • Increase the paper filing fee for Form N-400 from $760 to $1,330
  • Increase the online filing fee from $710 to $1,280
  • Eliminate the reduced-fee option for qualifying applicants
  • End most fee waivers for naturalization applications
  • Continue exempting eligible current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces from naturalization filing fees¹

Because this is currently a proposed rule, applicants still have an opportunity to file under the existing fee structure before any final rule becomes effective.

Should You Apply Now?

If you are already eligible for naturalization, filing sooner rather than later may help you avoid paying substantially higher government filing fees if the proposal is finalized.

However, timing is only one part of a successful naturalization application. Every case should be carefully prepared to minimize delays, requests for evidence, or avoidable complications. Ensuring that your eligibility, supporting documentation, and application are thoroughly reviewed before filing can make a meaningful difference throughout the process.
