Cory Forman Testifies on City Hall About ICE’s Deceptive Enforcement Policies in New York City
On February 28, 2020, Cory Forman testified before a joint city council committee on the impact of ICE enforcement actions in New York City. Cory testified how ICE’s tactics of deceptively identifying themselves as police officers results in confusion among the city’s immigrant communities, who are led to believe that ICE is working in tandem with the NYPD. Cory noted that this leads to an environment of distrust that undermines the valuable relationship between the immigrant population and the NYPD. Cory also touched on the need for an independent immigration judiciary. Under the current system, immigration judges and ICE are both under the jurisdiction of the executive branch of government. Cory testified that under this structure, the judiciary- whose judges are appointed by the Attorney General- cannot provide credible and reliable oversight of the agency.
